How To Convert Videos For The iPhone For Free

By

Convert Video's To The iPhone 3G, 3GS And iPhone 4 For Free

I just got my new iPhone 4 on release day and I was very excited to see what it could do. The speed, features and ease of use were amazing but I wanted to see what this "retina" screen was capable of compared to my iPhone 3G.

So I naturally thought to put a movie on the phone to test out this 960x640 resolution and 326ppi screen. Thinking about it was easy, finding software to do it was difficult.

So like anyone else would do I hit Google to find software to convert a movie I already had, to the right format and resolution to work on my new iPhone. I found several "free" programs that let you only convert 5 minute clips unless you paid $30 and others that weren't made for the iPhone so even if you converted it to the right format the iPhone wanted nothing to do with it. But then finally I found a great program and it was absolutely free, and to my surprise was far easier to use than those "free" programs I had found earlier.

Free Video to iPhone Converter

This software ironically named Free Video to iPhone Converter will do just that, it will convert videos on your computer to mp4 format and enable you to view them on your iPhone.

Supported formats for this software are: *.avi, *.mpg, *.mpeg, *.mpe, *.wmv, *.mov, *.qt, *.amv, *.3gp, *.3g2, *.flv.

This software is just about the easiest program in the world to use and here are simple instructions on how to use it.  Windows XP/Vista/7 only

  1. Download Here
  2. After installing open Free Video to iPhone Converter.
  3. Under input files hit browse and tell it where the video you would like to convert is.
  4. Set ouput folder, which is where you want the converted file to be on your computer.
  5. Set quality, you have three options Economy which is the lowest quality also converts the fastest and uses the least amount of space. Standard is the middle option that gives you decent quality and uses a little more space and takes a little longer. The third option is Best and that one provides the best quality, uses the most space and takes the longest to convert.
  6. After that just one more option iPhone 3G/3GS or iPhone 4, the only difference between the two is screen resolution the 3G/3GS has 480x320 resolution and the iPhone 4 has 960x640 resolution. After you select one hit Convert.
  7. Wait, depending on the quality and length of the video it could take several minutes to several hours. Once it completes it will automatically add the file to iTunes and you will be set to sync your device.
  8. Enjoy

So that was easy enough and free, the video looks great and you didn't have to worry about audio and video bit rates and video and audio codecs and all those other options you have no idea what to set to.

My experience with this software has been great but if you want the best quality be prepared to wait. I converted a two hour movie in the highest quality and it took 6 hours and took up 2gb of data, so depending on your storage situation and patience you may want to settle on the standard quality option. Of course you'll have to have at least one high quality video to show off to all your friends.

Overall

Overall the software works great especially for the price, and since it is free, might as well try it. And what if you have a different phone? Well the site also has converters for Android, Blackberry, HTC and many many more and if you need to rip your DVD to the computer there's free software for that too, check out all the free software they have here.

With software like this available I really don't know why anyone pays for programs like this anymore. They do ask you to download a bunch of toolbars but after you say no they leave you alone, no ads, no viruses or spyware, so enjoy!

Can you recommended any better video converters. They don't have to be free, but since I'm one the go most of the time multi-core support and more video options would be nice. Thanks for the tutorial by the way :)
